Practical Ways to Practice Peace
When we are able to get out of the constant chatter of our own minds — therein lies peace.
But how do we do that?
Sometimes trying to meditate just demonstrates how overactive our minds really are. We are trapped in outward appearances, living in a fast-paced, high-tech world and completely disconnected from nature. Motivated by desires and expectations, we experience emptiness and dissatisfaction. Somewhere deep inside… We know there is so much more. We catch a glimpse, but it quickly retreats in the demands and pressures of our everyday lives.
Our souls yearn to return to the beauty of simply being connected. Whether it is sitting quietly to listen to the song of the birds, closing our eyes to fully experience the warmth of the Sun, or laying beneath a clear night sky while gazing at the stars — it is in these moments that we find peace.
Through that peace, we can rediscover the inner consciousness that connects us to all of life.
We can all use this time of isolation to slow down and appreciate the life that surrounds us, in a whole new way.
It’s Springtime! Step outside and observe what is blooming all around you!
Take the time to notice, every day, something new that has blossomed in your surroundings. This is truly a celebration of life!
Find something that you can grow and nurture. Plant an herb garden. You can do this inside, if you don’t have a backyard.
Plant flowers or fruit bearing trees… Share this gift of life freely with others. Remember the words of Saint Francis of Assisi: “For it is in giving that we receive.”
See if you can track the movement of the Moon, as it moves through the sky… When does the Moon rise? When does the Moon set? Reconnect to your ancestors and monitor what is happening in the sky. Discover something new for yourself.
Step outside and breathe in the early morning air — do the same thing in the evening as well. Does the air feel and smell different to you? Tap into the innate subtle awareness of your being.
When we are able to turn away from the pressures of everyday life and find a quiet moment in nature, we bring healing and wholeness into our lives. It might feel like a brief moment, but the rewards of it are tenfold.
